The Department of Law at Al-Maarif University College, in cooperation with the Women’s Empowerment Unit, held a scientific seminar entitled “Enhancing the Status of Women and Protecting Her from Violence between Sharia and Law.”
The seminar’s themes were addressed by:
- Asst. Prof. Dr. Khalid Awwad Al-Alwani, Head of the Department of Law
- Prof. Dr. Mohammed Yasin Al-Hayti, Professor of Islamic Sharia at Al-Imam Al-Aʿzam College
- Assistant Lecturer Ibtehal Riyadh Dubaʿ, faculty member in the Department of Law
The proceedings of the seminar included a review of the distinguished status of women under the tolerant Islamic Sharia, whereby God has honored her as a human being, and as a mother, sister, wife, or daughter, granting her rights that no man-made legislative system can match in scope.
The legal efforts to enhance the status of women and prevent discrimination against them at both the international and domestic levels were also reviewed. This was done through the adoption of international instruments that place obligations on states related to women’s empowerment, non-discrimination, and combating violence that may affect them, in addition to domestic legal provisions that reflect these obligations.
The seminar witnessed interventions and questions from the attendees, which added an atmosphere of engagement and excitement. At the end of the seminar, the Head of the Department of Law thanked the participants and the audience, reaffirming the department’s continued commitment to organizing more purposeful scientific activities. And God is the source of success.
