The Department of Law at Al-Maarif University College held a scientific seminar entitled (Enhancing the Status of Women and Protecting them from Violence between Sharia and the Law), given by Prof. Dr. Khalid Awad Al-Alwani, Head of the Law Department, Asst. Lec. Ibtihal Riyad Dabaa, and Prof. Dr. Mohammed Yassin Al-Hiti – Professor of Islamic Shariaa – Al-Imam Al-Adhim College, in cooperation with the Unit of Empowerment of Women.
The seminar included a review of the prestigious status of women under the tolerant Islamic law, as Allah honored her as a human being and as a mother, sister, wife, or daughter, and granted her rights that are not matched by any positive legislative system within its scope.
Legal efforts were also reviewed to enhance the status of women and prevent discrimination against them at the level of international and domestic law through the adoption of international instruments that place obligations on states related to empowering women, preventing discrimination against them, and combating violence that may affect them, in addition to the texts of domestic laws that emulate those obligations.
The seminar witnessed interventions and questions from the attendees, which added an atmosphere of effectiveness and excitement.
At the end of the seminar, the Head of the Law Department thanked the participant and the attendees, stressing the continuation of the approach followed by the department in establishing more purposeful scientific activities.
