Women Access Schemes (5.3.3)

1-Introduction

The University of Al-Maarif (UoA) is firmly committed to ensuring equitable access to education, employment, and leadership opportunities for women. Recognizing the vital role of women in academia and society, the university has developed comprehensive Women Access Schemes aimed at promoting gender inclusion, supporting professional development, and eliminating barriers to participation.

These schemes form an integral part of UoA’s strategic alignment with SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 5 (Gender Equality), reflecting the institution’s vision of creating a campus environment that empowers women and fosters equal opportunity for all.

2. Objectives

The Women Access Schemes seek to achieve the following objectives:

  • Enhance women’s representation across all academic levels and disciplines.
  • Support female students’ enrollment, retention, and graduation.
  • Increase the participation of women in academic, administrative, and leadership positions.
  • Provide financial and academic support to women from underrepresented or disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • Promote an inclusive and gender-sensitive institutional culture.

3. Key Components of the Schemes

A. Scholarships and Financial Support

UoA offers dedicated scholarships for women pursuing degrees in STEM, business, education, and health sciences. These scholarships are designed to reduce financial barriers and encourage women to pursue higher education in areas where they are underrepresented.

B. Academic and Career Mentorship

The university runs mentorship programs pairing female students and young academics with experienced faculty and professionals. These mentorships provide guidance in academic development, research, leadership, and career advancement.

C. Leadership Development Programs

Special leadership training workshops and seminars are organized to build women’s confidence, communication, and management skills—preparing them for leadership roles within the university and beyond.

D. Research and Innovation Grants for Women

UoA allocates research grants exclusively for women researchers to support gender-focused research, innovation projects, and community engagement initiatives that promote social progress and sustainability.

E. Flexible Learning and Working Arrangements

To support work-life balance, UoA provides flexible scheduling, remote learning options, and family-friendly policies that help female students and staff manage academic and personal responsibilities effectively.

F. Awareness and Advocacy Campaigns

Regular awareness activities—such as Gender Equality Week, Women in Science Forums, and Career Empowerment Days—are conducted to highlight women’s achievements and advocate for equal opportunities.

4. Implementation Framework

The implementation of the Women Access Schemes is managed through a collaborative framework involving:

5. Monitoring and Evaluation

To ensure transparency and continuous improvement, UoA conducts annual evaluations of women’s participation and outcomes. The evaluation process includes:

  • Tracking enrollment and graduation rates by gender.
  • Assessing participation in training, research, and leadership programs.
  • Reviewing policy implementation reports and feedback from beneficiaries.
  • Publishing results in the Gender Equality and Inclusion Report.

This data-driven monitoring allows the university to identify areas for improvement and maintain accountability in promoting gender equity.

To address these, UoA plans to:

Introduce an Annual Women Empowerment Award recognizing outstanding female achievements.

Expand scholarship programs for STEM and postgraduate women.

Strengthen collaborations with national and international women’s organizations.

Develop Women Leadership Networks within and beyond the university.
