Interdisciplinary Research Framework

University of Al-Maarif Scientific Research Vision

In alignment with the University of Al-Maarif's vision to be a leading institution in scientific research and innovation, the university seeks to develop its interdisciplinary research ecosystem as a core pillar for enhancing academic excellence and effectively responding to complex societal challenges. The university believes that integrating knowledge and methodologies from multiple disciplines constitutes an effective pathway to produce knowledge that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries and contributes to achieving sustainable development goals.

Research Types

1. Interdisciplinary Research

A scientific approach that integrates knowledge and methodologies from multiple disciplines to solve complex problems, relying on genuine interaction and integration across fields.

2. Multidisciplinary Research

Cooperation among different disciplines to study a topic or solve a specific problem, where each discipline contributes its own perspective without genuine methodological integration.

3. Intradisciplinary Research

Conducted exclusively within a single academic discipline using field-specific tools and methodologies to deepen specialized knowledge.

Added Value of Interdisciplinary Research

  • Innovative Solutions to Complex Problems – renewable energy, AI in medicine, climate change.
  • Advancing New Knowledge – generating new theories and technologies.
  • Scientific Collaboration – enhancing creativity and teamwork.
  • Societal and Industrial Impact – practical solutions in health and technology.
  • Adaptability to Technology – keeping pace with AI and biotechnology.
  • Funding Opportunities – improving research rankings and funding chances.

Interdisciplinary Classification Framework

Research is classified as interdisciplinary when it integrates two or more core scientific disciplines.

Category Sub-disciplines
Physical Sciences Chemistry, Physics, Nanotechnology, Mathematics, Materials Science
Life Sciences Biology, Genetics, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Nutrition
Engineering Biomedical, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering
Computer Science AI, Software Engineering, Information Systems
Medical & Health Sciences Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Public Health
Social Sciences Economics, Sociology, Psychology, Education

Criteria for Classifying Research

  1. Multi-Subject Classification
  2. Citation Network Analysis
  3. Author Collaboration
  4. Journal Classification
  5. Keyword and Abstract Analysis
  6. Cross-Discipline Citation Impact
  7. Field-Weighted Citation Impact

Important Note

Research is only classified as interdisciplinary when it includes at least one core scientific discipline combined with another qualifying discipline. Clinical-only or humanities-only combinations do not qualify under international interdisciplinary classification standards.
