SDG 1 – No Poverty

University of Al-Maarif’s Commitment to Eradicating Poverty and Promoting Social Inclusion

Poverty remains one of humanity’s most persistent challenges, affecting millions worldwide and restricting access to basic needs such as food, education, housing, and healthcare.
Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly Goal 1: End poverty in all its forms everywhereUniversity of Al-Maarif (UOA) is deeply committed to supporting Iraq’s national strategy for social equity and sustainable development.

Through education, community partnerships, and financial empowerment programs, the University works to alleviate poverty, build inclusive communities, and create pathways to sustainable livelihoods in the Al-Anbar region and across Iraq.

Understanding Poverty in the Iraqi Context

Poverty in Iraq is shaped by economic, social, and post-conflict realities that limit access to employment, education, and essential services.
UOA recognizes that eradicating poverty requires multi-dimensional approaches—combining quality education, skill development, community outreach, and research-based policymaking—to empower individuals and sustain long-term economic growth.

University of Al-Maarif’s Approach

1. Quality Education for All

Education is central to poverty reduction.
UOA provides accessible, high-quality education across disciplines including medicine, engineering, business, and information technology.
Scholarship programs and flexible learning pathways enable students from disadvantaged backgrounds to continue their studies without financial barriers.

In 2024 alone, the University awarded 72 full or partial scholarships to students from low-income families, ensuring equitable access to higher education.

2. Skill Development and Vocational Training

UOA has implemented several vocational and entrepreneurship training programs to enhance employability and income generation.
These initiatives include:

      • Technical workshops on renewable energy installation, healthcare technologies, and IT systems.

      • Entrepreneurship bootcamps in partnership with Al-Anbar Chamber of Commerce.

      • Internship programs that link students to local industry and small enterprises.

These programs help participants acquire practical skills, improve their career prospects, and contribute to the regional economy.

    3. Community Engagement and Social Responsibility

The University actively collaborates with civil society organizations, NGOs, and local councils to support vulnerable groups.

    Key Initiatives:

        • Annual Community Support Week featuring free medical checkups, food packages, and legal consultations.

        • Partnership with the Al-Anbar Orphans Care Society to provide education sponsorships and school materials.

        • Volunteer-driven campaigns for housing rehabilitation and winter clothing distribution.

Through these efforts, UOA students and faculty serve as agents of social transformation, embodying compassion and civic duty.

      4. Research and Innovation for Poverty Reduction

UOA integrates poverty alleviation into its research agenda through the Center for Social and Economic Studies (CSES), which conducts applied research on:

          • Sustainable microfinance systems,

          • Employment and youth development,

          • Social entrepreneurship models, and

          • Public policy for income equity.

Findings from these studies inform government and NGO programs, ensuring evidence-based poverty interventions.

        5. Scholarships and Financial Assistance

UOA believes no talented student should be denied education due to economic hardship.
To that end, the University offers:

            • Merit-based scholarships for academic excellence,

            • Needs-based grants for students from disadvantaged areas,

            • Emergency assistance funds, and

            • Tuition installment options through public-private sponsorships.

Between 2021 and 2024, over 300 students benefited from the University’s financial-aid and scholarship schemes.

          Local Partnerships for Poverty Reduction

Memorandum of Understanding with Al-Anbar Orphans Care Association

Signed in 2023, this MoU promotes educational support for orphans and underprivileged students through joint fundraising, training, and career mentoring.

Partnership with the Iraqi Red Crescent Society

Together with the Red Crescent, UOA organizes annual humanitarian drives including food aid, blood donation, and post-disaster recovery programs in western Iraq.

          University of Al-Maarif Humanitarian Hackathon

UOA hosts the annual Humanitarian Innovation Hackathon, where programmers, social workers, and students collaborate to design tech-based solutions for poverty, food security, and public health.

          Objectives:

              Volunteerism and Humanitarian Action

UOA students and staff engage in voluntary service that advances SDG 1 and other related goals:

                  • Ramadan Solidarity Campaigns: Annual Iftar events with orphan-care associations.

                Strategic Alliances and Social Partnerships

The University continues to build partnerships with government and financial institutions to extend poverty alleviation initiatives.

This partnership offers tuition fee discounts for employees of financial-sector institutions and their families, advancing accessibility to higher education while fostering professional development.

Participating entities include the Central Bank of Iraq, Ministry of Finance, and Capital Markets Authority.

By promoting equitable access to higher education, supporting low-income communities, and fostering innovation, UOA contributes directly to SDG 1 – No Poverty, as well as to SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
