Student Mental Health (3.3.5)

Introduction

The University of Al-Maarif (UOA), located in Ramadi, Al-Anbar Governorate, Iraq, recognizes that student well-being is fundamental to academic success, personal development, and long-term societal contribution. As part of its institutional commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals—particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 4 (Quality Education)—the University has established a comprehensive system to support mental, emotional, and psychological health among its students.

This system is led by the Center for Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance, in strategic collaboration with the Department of Clinical Psychology and the Professional Diploma in Psychological Counseling and Specialist Training Program. These units form a unified framework designed to:

  • Promote mental health literacy

  • Provide preventive and therapeutic psychological support

  • Enhance emotional resilience and stress management

  • Create a safe, inclusive, and supportive academic environment

Mental well-being support at UOA is built on scientific, ethical, and humanitarian foundations. The programs are designed and implemented by trained psychological counselors, clinical psychology specialists, and experienced academic faculty who ensure confidentiality, evidence-based practices, and cultural sensitivity.

Through counseling services, awareness workshops, skill-building activities, mental health campaigns, and academic support strategies, UOA actively helps students navigate the personal and academic pressures they may face. This holistic approach ensures that the university does not only focus on intellectual development, but also underscores emotional balance, social support, and psychological empowerment.
