For Iraq, a country defined by its historic river systems\u2014the <strong>Tigris and Euphrates<\/strong>\u2014and its access to the <strong>Arabian Gulf<\/strong>, protecting aquatic life is crucial for maintaining food security, economic livelihoods, and environmental stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Iraq\u2019s water systems have faced increasing challenges due to <strong>pollution, reduced water flow, salinity, industrial waste, and the impacts of climate change<\/strong>. In response, the <strong>Government of Iraq<\/strong>, through the <strong>Ministry of Environment<\/strong>, the <strong>Ministry of Water Resources<\/strong>, and the <strong>Marine Science Center<\/strong>, has taken significant steps to <strong>preserve aquatic ecosystems, reduce pollution, and restore biodiversity<\/strong> in rivers, marshes, and coastal waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key Government Initiatives Supporting SDG 14 in Iraq<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Restoration and Protection of the Iraqi Marshlands<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Southern Marshlands of Iraq<\/strong>, once known as the \u201cGarden of Eden,\u201d represent one of the most important wetland ecosystems in the Middle East.
